The Three "R's" of Environmental
and Energy Solutions
We at AES
have chosen to dedicate this month's newsletter to the
"Three "R's" of Environmental and Energy Solutions
- Recovery, Responsibility and Reinvestment. Our first article
deals with the Recovery Plan and it's focus on energy
conservation and new technologies. Our second article deals
directly with the Responsibility we have to let the science and
the research take us where we need to go to clean up contaminated
sites. The last article details how important it is to to see
every energy conservation measure taken as a Reinvestment in the
environment and our daily lives.

The Recovery Act and the Green Revolution
By Jude
Horton
The recent Recovery Act has gotten quite a bit of attention -
some good, some, well, 'not great.' Regardless of the hype, the
energy goals listed on their website (The
Recovery Act) are encouraging. Looking ahead to
the inevitable rate hike that will accompany the coming
deregulation, and the rate at which our carbon footprint will
grow if left unchecked, researching how your business can take
advantage of this program is a smart move. A few major points:
.
- Thousands of public housing units for
lower- income residents, including the elderly and disabled,
will be developed and modernized as a result of
approximately $1 billion in grants from the Department of
Housing and Urban Development. Most of the grant money will
be devoted to making the units more energy efficient, thus
decreasing utility costs to the residents.
- By fiscal year 2012, the major portion of
funding will shift to long-term economic growth
opportunities in transportation, energy, and community
development.
- The General Services Administration will
spend $5.55 Billion on over 250 construction projects in all
50 states, the District of Columbia, and two U.S.
territories. The projects will support the President's
vision for a clean energy future, create jobs, and reinvest
in our public buildings.
An excerpt from the Department of Energy's Recovery page outlines
their broad Recovery goals. "The bill provides DOE with
the funding and responsibilities to help lift our country out of
an economic recession through strategic investments in
technologies that increase energy efficiency, expand renewable
generation, improve electric transmission, reduce our dependence
on oil, accelerate transformational sciences, reduce our legacy
footprint, and lower greenhouse gas emissions-investments that
will create and protect jobs that will energize our
economy." They expect to accomplish this through
strategic and focused efforts to do the following:
- Promote Energy Efficiency
- Deploy Renewable Power
- Modernize the Grid
- Reduce Oil Consumption
- Restore America's Scientific Leadership
- Reduce Legacy Environmental Footprint
- Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Some of the technologies and methods mentioned are Hydrogen /
Fuel Cell Technologies, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block
Grants, Weatherization Assistance Program, State Energy Program,
Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebates, Geothermal Technology, and Wind
Energy.

Science Drives the Show
By Brian
Beahan, P.G. - President
We at Alternative Environmental Solutions, Inc. (AES) have a
saying that I find myself sharing with our valued clients
frequently - "The science drives the show". Nothing
could be truer than this in the business of providing site
specific environmental solutions, especially in today's economic
climate. We are hired, quite simply, when someone has a problem
and needs a solution. One must first ask questions, then learn
the facts, and ultimately to provide solutions. For the solution
to occur, one always has to research and find the scientific
facts, because facts are an integral aspect of what dictates the
proper solution for each unique situation. So how is that done
today? Let me tell you about two such ways.
Our company was founded in the traditional environmental science
fields of assessment (sometimes known as characterization) and
remediation. Today, this still comprises over 60% of our
business. Thankfully, regulatory officials have developed
regulations that enable our vision of developing alternative
environmental solutions to become reality. Because of this, sites
are routinely closed with "science driving the show",
and the environmental facts, site characteristics and regulations
supporting opinions which point to solutions that are founded in
irrefutable scientific fact. It's a challenging time to be a part
of this industry, yet also a rewarding time since it has matured
into one where wholly scientific facts can be used to provide value-added
solutions to businesses in need of environmental assessment and
remediation support.
A second area where scientific facts are an integral part of
crafting a solution is in the energy conservation field -
particularly where inefficient outdoor lighting can cost
businesses thousands of dollars every month. For example, as a
company who operates in the realm of scientific facts, we have
made the decision to incorporate an induction lighting solution
into the menu of services we provide for our clients. The
research indicates that induction lighting technology is the
cutting edge, scientifically-proven, best outdoor commercial
lighting solution available today. We've audited countless
facilities with an open mind to the best solutions in both energy
savings and return on investment, and induction technology has
been the consistently best option for our clients looking to
reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions (such as
carbon dioxide) and spending, while enhancing outdoor lighting
quality. If we in the industry of energy conservation, and
specifically that of providing high-wattage outdoor lighting
solutions to our commercial clients, want to allow the science to
drive the show, we can't deny that induction lighting must be the
technology of choice in today's market.

show" in the environmental solutions business, please

Living with Energy
Conservation - Sustainable Ideas for Residential Awareness
By Dereck Garner
As necessary and appealing as the development of alternative
energy sources, it seems that the surest, fastest way to impact
our environment is energy conservation. It is crucial that we
take time as individuals and corporations to plan the development
and implementation of specific energy conservation strategies,
not only to reduce impact to the environment, but also to reduce
the impact to our wallets. Deregulation has become more and more
evident as federal energy rate caps expire. By taking small steps
to reduce energy consumption in our busy lives, we will find
ourselves enriched by a world free of smog emitting carbons and
our budgets full of energy savings, further providing an enhanced
quality of life. Those who fail to realize the importance of
energy conservation, and the impact these ideas have on each
individual and corporation, will be left behind, as those who are
aware and plan will become part of a sustainable self-fulfilling
generation.
Taking an interest and becoming aware of overall energy usage is
the first step to living a sustainable life. Reducing power used
to illuminated lights, HVAC technologies, business machines and
home appliances will reduce carbon emissions to the environment,
which ultimately affect personal well- being and productivity.
